Why We Invested in Rare Candy
A day at your local hobby shop used to be more than just a place to buy and sell, it was a vibrant social hub. It was where you met friends, traded collectibles, competed in tournaments, and shared the thrill of your latest find, whether it was a rare Pokémon card, a Magic booster pack, or the newest board game. But as our lives moved increasingly online, that sense of community and tangible connection has faded. The digital world has yet to truly capture the magic of in- person collecting.
Rare Candy is changing that by reimagining the experience of the neighborhood hobby shop in a digital setting. By blending an online marketplace with collector-first tools and community features, Rare Candy is creating an online experience that feels welcoming, social, and fun.
Rare Candy isn't just another marketplace. What sets them apart is how deeply integrated collector tools are within the buying experience (something we've never seen at this level in a collectibles marketplace). And it’s working: monthly active users have grown 30x since last summer]. Rare Candy started with Pokémon and will expand into other iconic franchises like Magic: The Gathering later this month, and has the long-term vision of being the central hub for all fandom-driven collectibles and culture.
We’re proud to support founders Chris Knape, whose deep expertise spans product development and marketplaces, and Lee Steinfeld (known online as Leonhart), a leading voice and influential figure in the Pokémon community. Together, they’re building something that not only serves collectors, but also brings them together around the things they love.
Konvoy is excited to back Rare Candy as they bring the heart of collecting into the digital age.
