Do you ever wonder how many people play video games?

Video games are very popular these days and are one of the biggest ways people have fun around the globe.

Whether you’re into blockbuster titles, getting competitive in MOBA games, building characters in RPGs, or just relaxing with some idle games, there’s definitely something for everyone in the gaming world.

In this article, we will look at how many gamers there are and discuss how venture capital is supporting this growing industry.

How Many People Play Video Games in 2025?

By mid-2025, roughly 3.32 billion people are expected to be gaming around the globe, and some sources think it could even top 3.5 billion by the end of the year

That’s almost half of everyone on the planet getting into the video games' industry.

Gamers come in all types; there are casual mobile players who like quick and easy games, long-time gamers who dive deep into their favorite popular titles, and even those nostalgic web-based players who are all about Flash games or retro classics.

Which Regions Have the Most Gamers?

According to Udonis, the Asia-Pacific region is a gaming hotspot with about 1.48 billion gamers, which makes up around 45% of all gamers out there.

It is not surprising, as Asia understands the benefits of video games for education.

Europe comes next, with somewhere between 352 and 715 million gamers.

Other big regions include Latin America with about 420 million, North America with around 285 million, the Middle East and North Africa with 168 million, and Sub-Saharan Africa with 144 million.

Different research might throw out different figures depending on what they consider an "active gamer" versus a "digital game user," but it's pretty clear that well over 3 billion people are gaming in 2025.

Popular Game Genres in 2025

Let’s break down the statistics of the most popular types of video games today.

1. AAA Games

AAA games are large, well-funded titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Call of Duty.

These games require millions of dollars for development and marketing.

Because of this investment, AAA games generate a lot of revenue and player engagement.

According to Dataintelo, the global market for AAA games is expected to grow from $80 billion in 2023 to $150 billion by 2032, with a yearly growth rate of 7.5%.

2. MOBA Games

MOBA games like League of Legends and Dota 2 pull in competitive players from all around the globe.

These games have huge esports scenes, which means they’re not just for fun; they can also turn into legitimate careers.

For instance, Twinfinite says that League of Legends is set to have around 130 million average monthly players by 2025

On top of that, Bang Bang boasts about 100 million total subscribers and over 120,000 daily active players.

3. MMO Games

The MMO market is expected to grow to $26.65 billion by 2025, with thousands of players sharing the same virtual world.

MMOs, ranging from fantasy RPGs to futuristic battle games, build community, strategy, and progression.

  • Final Fantasy XIV Online has about 13.6 million players, with around 58,000 active users daily.
  • Elder Scrolls Online has roughly 25 million subscriptions and about 88,000 daily users.
  • RuneScape has about 19.8 million accounts.

4. Idle Games

Idle games are easy to play but very addictive. They let you make progress even when you’re not playing.

In 2025, these games are often among the top genres by downloads and engagement on mobile platforms.

5. Blockchain Games

Blockchain games use decentralized networks to give players real ownership of in-game items, known as NFTs.

Axie Infinity and The Sandbox are popular examples of these games.

According to Bitget Exchange, in January 2025, Blockchain gaming had over 7 million daily unique active wallets, which was a 386% increase from the previous year.

However, by April 2025, the number of daily active wallets dropped to 4.8 million.

6. Indie Games

By mid-2025, over 4,600 indie games will have been published on Steam, making it a record year for independent developers.

Games like Hollow Knight and Celeste show how successful smaller developers can be.

In fact, indie games are competing with and sometimes earning more than AAA titles on platforms like Steam.

How Venture Capital Is Fueling the Future of Gaming?

At Konvoy, we see how venture capital is changing the gaming world.

From small indie developers to blockchain gaming startups, funding is important for sparking new ideas.

When founders want to make a game, they usually start looking for money during the pre-seed or seed stage

They pitch their concepts to angel investors, friends and family, or early-stage venture capital firms

As these startups grow, they move through the Series A, Series B, and other funding rounds.

Then comes mega-acquisitions, like Microsoft’s $75.4 billion deal to buy Activision Blizzard, showing just how valuable gaming companies have become.

Most venture capital firms don’t just provide funding. We also offer strategy, mentorship, and industry connections.
